A fascinating Grade II Listed house with numerous outbuildings and a self-contained single storey annexe, centrally situated in the pretty village of Membury in East Devon close to the market town of Axminster. We understand that the main house has origins dating back to 1540 and there is certainly an abundance of character in the property. The large Inglenook fireplace has a very well preserved bread oven and there are flagstone floors through several of the ground floor rooms. Later Victorian influence can be seen in the hall floor tiling. The property has the benefit of a self-contained annexe in the form of a stone bungalow, comprising a bedroom, shower room, lounge, kitchen and conservatory, which is situated in the garden. There are also a number of outbuildings: a stone barn, one side of which is two storey, the other side having a vaulted ceiling, along with a former stables with tin roof, having been split into storage, workshop and chicken coop areas. The garden is a good size, the whole plot measuring just over a quarter acre and there is ample parking for several cars with a gated driveway and entrance from the village road. The accommodation in the main house comprises four bedrooms, bathroom, a long landing, spacious kitchen/dining room, a rear porch, cloakroom, small front hall leading into the large lounge with lovely Inglenook fireplace and flagstone floors, through to an internal hall, off which is a good sized study and stairs leading to the first floor. The windows, many of which have window seats, are a mixture of single and double glazed. There is oil fired central heating with radiators throughout.
Membury is a small village about 4 miles northwest of Axminster and is in the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The village has a small but strong community with a Primary School and Village Hall, with several clubs operating throughout the village, including arts and crafts, badminton, history society, short mat bowls and bell ringing amongst them.
Axminster is an old market town made famous by the Axminster carpet company and is situated on the River Axe in East Devon. There is a main line train station with services to London Waterloo and Exeter and the town provides a good range of day to day shopping, banking and health needs with plenty of cafes including the River Cottage Canteen, which draws visitors to the town. The city of Exeter is about 30 miles distant and the airport a little closer at about 25 miles.
