THE STORY Visitors approaching St John's Church often comment on its exterior beauty but nothing quite prepares them for what they discover inside. Please note, like all churches in England, there is a graveyard in the grounds of the property and whilst the headstones have been removed, the graves still remain.
The former church dates back to 1837 and sits in approximately half an acre of mature grounds. The main body of the building, once the nave, where the congregation would have worshipped, is today an awe-inspiring, central living space, with a high, vaulted ceiling. "It is very large, which has allowed me to do things like hang a car and a motorbike on the wall for decoration!" he pointed out. "Because of its size, it is also an incredible place to have parties." Other modern touches include the likes of a mezzanine level that houses a cinema area, a floating staircase and a very contemporary, all-glass conservatory or garden room. The property also features a stunning red kitchen, in high gloss, which sits where the altar would once have been. "I had the kitchen hand-built and chose the wine colour for the doors because it looked perfect within the church setting," he explained. "It has a Gaggenau work surfaces in black granite and appliances from the same brand."
Much of the theatre of the home comes from Angel's careful use of contemporary design touches alongside original features. A wooden floor stretches the length of the living space while pews and other carved pieces feature decoratively throughout. The original font also makes an eye-catching feature while the great arched and stained glass windows bright light streaming into the home. "In the morning, the sun comes into the kitchen through the stained glass window, producing some amazing colours," said Angel. Careful use of intelligent lighting adds further interest through colour and enhances the ambience in different sections of the house.
Each bedroom has its own en suite bathroom, making guests to St John's so comfortable they are often hesitant to leave, joked Angel. The unusual home has also played host to film and television crews who have used it as a backdrop. Programmes including the likes of ITV's Lewis have been shot on location here. "This house is easy to reach and to travel from as well," he added. "It is just a couple of minutes from the M25 and M40, and is also just a short drive from the M4 and Heathrow. "This is a great place to live - you have everything you need here. It is unusual but it is also very welcoming. "As soon as I open the front door every day, I feel glad to be home."
Angel's careful interior design at St John's Church has seen him cleverly conceal various necessities of daily life. A console table made from one half of the original pulpit adorns a false wall that hides a storage space. The washing machine and utility sink are secreted behind units made out of the pews. He also hid the wine cellar and cold room beneath the altar steps. Instead of radiators, he has installed a heat recovery system.
From the main entrance gate, a York stone pathway leads to the heavy oak front door under the public wall clock and church bell. The entrance vestibule with light marble tiled floor and exposed brick walls extends an ancient welcome and is bright and uplifting with its glazed vaulted roof. A novel built-in cabinet made from church pews encases a stainless steel utility sink and washing machine. Glazed double doors of contemporary ecclesiastical style open into the main hallway. Original oak flooring warmly flows from the hallway into the living area and above is a suspended ceiling with concealed lighting which has mood colour control. The hallway, which is long enough to accommodate one of the original church pews, has a useful under-stairs storage cupboard concealed behind a rotating flush door.
